Tap the bell icon on the YouTube app And never miss out on unique stories from 101 India In the mid 90s I saw a little skate video These 3 skateboarders came to India And they were doing tricks At interesting places What struck me most was What was happening around in the video And when I saw that I thought to myself I need to go to India When I came to Mumbai I went to meet this artist Akhtar Who used to work in the poster painting industry Akhtar told me there’s not much value in art in Mumbai Especially for what they do And at the moment to make a living He makes portraits And since that doesn’t pay the bills He also does logos and some design work and calligraphy Because of technology, Bollywood has stopped using poster painters I thought it would be a great surprise To do my own version of a Bollywood movie called, “Haathi Mere Saathi” And present it to Akhtar as a gift I like Mumbai because it’s bustling In South Africa, our townships are similar to Mumbai But our townships are like the fourth degree And what’s happening here in Mumbai is the first degree Of the hustle and bustle Things overlapping And that’s what I like Even back home I spend most of my time painting in townships Because I prefer the vibe and the energy And there’s a lot more to offer and people appreciate it If you go to any place as a stranger or a foreigner You need to have the right contacts And when I came to Mumbai I was introduced to Tyrell And he turned out to be the right person I Love Mumbai The foundation started by Rahul Kanal and me We actually do a lot of art here in Bandra Then we’ll be moving outwards That’s why it’s called the Bandra Art Project right now For the past 4 years, I’ve been painting elephants, mainly And it will be good to take the herd other places And so far in 2017, the herd has been in India So how do you like the artwork? Very nice. I like it very much Your elephant anatomy is perfect India is a place that you cannot come to once I’ve been here twice already And I’m definitely going to come back
