Apple Drive Mural

A brand-new mural is brightening up the
hallways of Schuylerville Elementary School. “We’re trying to get a painting
for every single road or drive of the school.” As part of an annual 5th grade
project, students helped paint the second in a series of seasonal hallway street
murals. “The hallways have all been named… they had these street names on them and
there’s the Pony Express system, which Amy Jordan’s class does for delivering
mail to the different rooms, so we decided instead of having these – there’s these
small street signs on there, which are very nice, but we wanted to make it sort
of more elaborate so each one is going to have has a street sign painted into
it. Last year’s 5th grade class painted a winter scene for Pine Tree Ave while
this year’s 5th graders took on Apple Drive with an autumn theme. “I was able to
make it work so that every student in the 5th grade was able to to add
something to it…so that they’ll each get to sort of leave a permanent artwork
behind.” “The fifth grade all kind of worked together to create different pieces on it.” In
addition to trees, apples and leaves the fifth graders made the mural a scavenger
hunt of memories. “The mural’s about what we’ve learned and stuff we’ve gone
through kindergarten through fifth grade.” “Some of them added things from picture
books and some added from more recent stories, or things from other
classes that they’ve had. We added some things from art class and things
from science and some history aspects too. A lot of them that just came up with
really great ideas from things that will be recognizable by kindergarteners or
second graders for different things that they’ve learned about.” Next to the mural
is a poster of some of the things the younger students can try to find hidden
in the painting from The Very Hungry Caterpillar to the Saratoga Monument a
musical instrument and even some math facts scattered throughout. “I liked
working on the mural because I like art. It’s one of my
favorite things to do.” “It was a lot of fun because I like to doing art and it
looks really cool and like alive.”
