Carpentry & Home Improvement Skills : Different Types of Metal

Metal, metal, metal, metal, metal, lots of
different kinds of metals used in construction. I’m Robert Markey, I’ve been doing construction
for many, many years. And we’re going to talk about the different kinds of metals used in
construction. Galvanized iron, this is used for roofing, it’s used for drip edges, it’s
used for some flashing. Okay. The alternative to this is copper. Copper is used for some
roofs, it’s used for flashing, it’s used for valleys. The difference between copper and
the galvanized are twofold. One is beauty, ’cause the copper is a much more beautiful
material. It will also last longer, it’s also many, many times more expensive than the galvanized
metal, so this tends to be used much less than the galvanized. Aluminum is another alternative
for those same things, the flashings, the drip edge and the roofing. Aluminum is much
– it tends to be thinner and it tends to be much weaker, much easier to poke a hole
into. It will last a long time, but it’s easier to tear. It’s more expensive than the galvanized
and less expensive than the copper. Steel, steel is used for steel eye beams, for supporting
beams, for reinforcing in piers, and generally it’s a more of a framing construction kind
of a thing when you need a large, large expanse to be held up. Plumbing and wiring, you’re
going to use copper for your pipes, or plastic, again, expensive, and you’re going to use
brass for a lot of your fittings. Okay. I’m Robert Markey and we’ve been talking about
the different metals used in construction.
