DERRICK KAKEMBO | YELLOW x CANVAS

I like to really think about what I’m gonna
shoot I like to really think about the idea the angles, the lighting and in terms of preparation
I like to smash through it and listen to music as well that really helps get everyone going
a lot of people they pick up on black ideas or… and then what happens is the teams that
are working on these ideas don’t actually have an understanding of what they’re doing
they are just doing it because its an aesthetic. When there’s an idea for black models a lot
of times it has to be this really exotic idea this exotic lighting but when its a white
model it’s just an idea. So if I go to a modelling agency and I’m looking for a model and she’s
black that doesn’t even cross my mind I just think oh she’s cool, she’s pretty let me shoot
her. For me what space is about is respecting and treating models of colour and white models
the same and other times people put too much emphasis on the models being like… I wanna
make pictures that portray black women the way that I think they should be portrayed
by using the right stylist the right make up the right ideas whether its fictional ideas
or whether its subculture ideas. I want people to look at this images and be like whoa ok
that’s just an idea, a cool idea and for me, that’s what space is all about. These ideas
are cool but the kids that make the real ideas are not involved I’d love to see more people
from the culture involved in the creative process of documenting the culture that they
care about.
