Flooding in Australia leaves families home-less and job-less

Some Maori have been left
job-less and home-less following massive
flooding in Australia. Damages are currently estimated
at around $1 billion. Kingi Kiriona has this report. This is supposed to be one of
Australia’s sunniest spots. Though you wouldn’t
believe it to see it. Wattie McKay has lived in inland
Emerald for five years. Now his home and business,
are under water. His heavily pregnant wife was
nearly airlifted to Hospital, to give birth. Baby is OK, although the same can’t
be said for the region’s roads. Many Maori who are employed at
the local Emerald Coal Mine, haven’t been able to return to
work because of road closures. But 300-metres east of Emerald is the worst hit township
of Rock Hampton. Te Karere spoke with Maori
families living in the area who say that food is limited. But the waters in and
around Rock Hampton, are set to rise in coming days. Making one of Australia’s worst
floods, even more unbearable. Kingi Kiriona, Te Karere.
