From Interior Designer to Agency Owner

From Interior Designer to Agency Owner

(calm music) We came to the States
when I was two years old. We came from Southeast Asia,
in Cambodia, during the war. My parents were really like,
you have to be a doctor, or a lawyer, or something
to be considered successful. My previous career was in interior design. Something I was always
super passionate about, fashion, trend, you know, all of that, and what I realized after
about almost six years in that career, it was a glass ceiling, no more room for growth, and stagnant. Someone literally had to die or retire for me to really advance into
the next role or position to really give myself that
upward mobility and growth, so that’s when I realized quickly
at 24 and I was almost 25, that I was literally
having quarter life crisis where I was like, what
am I doing with myself? I need to change gear and
do something different, so left on good terms and
started really searching what I wanted to do. I really looked hard and
I was extremely picky, ’cause I wanted something not
only with recession proof, I wanted something that was going to challenge me personally, but also develop me professionally. I responded to an ad on
Craigslist, it really talked about career opportunity, upward
mobility, leadership, opening up new offices. I just felt the excitement
and energy in the ad itself, and when I came in to
an interview process, I really respected the
individual that interviewed me. I just was like, I wanna be like that guy. I wanna have that much confidence
behind what he’s saying, and he just really
showed what realistically this company and opportune
will allow me to do, as long as I do my part and work hard. When I told them I was
gonna do life insurance, they kinda understood the
concept of life insurance but they’re like, what do you mean, are you gonna go sell
your friends and family? I was like no, no, it
doesn’t work like that. We have a niche group. So it’s almost like speaking
two different languages. Fast forward almost 12
years later, they’re like, this is the best thing ever, we told you you should’ve
done this a long time ago, and yes, you should move
for that opportunity, you know that’s the
best thing for you ever. So they’re super proud
and I know that ultimately it’s just them loving
you and protecting you, just not wanting to see
you get in any way hurt.
