Home Improvement & Maintenance Tips : How to Buy Interior Paint

Hi I’m Tim Gipson I want to talk to you about
how to buy interior paint. Now there’s several grades and several types of finishes that
you can get in interior paint. So in choosing your paint you want to really look at your
application. Now paint comes in a flat, which has no sheen to it whatsoever. And you have
an eggshell, a satin, which is a very, very low sheen. A semi-gloss, which has a sheen,
quite a good sheen to it. And then all the way up to your gloss, which has a very high
sheen to it. Now typically your gloss and those types are used on your trim, and used
to really accent your trim in your home. Where we get to painting walls is where we look
at the products from an flat finish all the way up to a semi-gloss finish. Now in this
particular application in here we’re renovating a bathroom, and repainting the bathroom. In
this case we’re using a satin finish. The satin finish what it will do is it provides
a little bit of sheen, but in a moisture type of area like we have in a bathroom. It’s a
good finish to use, because it’s a good durable finish. It will actually hold up a lot better
than soy a flat finish would. But as you use a higher sheen paint, the higher sheen paint
particularly on your walls, will show more defects. And that’s why you’ll see a flat
latex paint being used on your ceilings. Because what it does is it doesn’t reflect as much
light and will hide a lot of defects in your ceilings. So you’ll want to use typically
a low, a flat paint. And then if you’ve got some walls that are heavily damaged and they’re
very difficult to repair, in those cases it would be better to use a flat paint. And so
when you’re looking at purchasing your paint you want to get a good quality paint, if it’s
something that a paint color that you’re going to be using for a while you want to make sure
you use a quality paint that’s going to last and going to be durable. And whether you need
to be washable, whether you need to hide defects, or whether you need to provide an accent and
give a lot of punch to the colors or the features that you’re trying to bring out by painting.
So I’m Tim Gipson, and that’s some tips on purchasing interior paint.
