Home Improvement & Maintenance Tips : How to Choose Paint

Hi, I’m Tim Gipson and I’m going to talk to
you about how to choose paint. Now when you’re looking at the type of paint to acquire you
really need to think about your application. Paint comes available in from a flat which
has no sheen to it whatsoever and then you have a satin which has just a very slight
sheen to it or sometimes it’s referred to as an egg shell. You have a semi gloss. And
then you have a glass, which has a very high sheen to it. Now typically looking at the
gloss paint, you’ll choose the gloss paint for when you’re painting trim, and those of
areas where you want to really accent the certain areas that you are painting. So, gloss
will be used in trim, on cabinets, or you know different type of furniture that you
may have you in your home. Now when we’re painting walls, that’s where we’re going to
look at using either a flat or some type of sheen. Now if you have some walls that are
fairly new construction and they’re fairly smooth, then you know going with a satin,
an egg shell or a semi gloss will give you a more durable finish. You know in particularly
in moisture prone areas you might really want to look at choosing a satin or a semi gloss.
Now keep in mind that the more sheen that you have to your paint, the more defects that
it will show in your walls that you’re painting. And that’s typically why we’ll use a flat
paint or an ultra flat paint for ceilings, because they are more susceptible to reflecting
light and you don’t want to draw a lot of attention to that. So you want to use a flatter
product. So in considering the type of paint you want to choose you want to look to your
surface, the better quality surface that you have then the smoother surface you can use
a higher sheen, the more durability, use a higher sheen. If you’re trying to hide imperfections
in the wall, then you want to use a flatter paint. I’m Tim Gipson and that’s how to choose
interior paint.
