Home Improvement & Maintenance Tips : How to Create a Mostly Self-Maintained Water Feature

Hi, I’m Tim Gipson and I’m going to talk to
you about how to create a mostly self maintained water feature in your yard. In this case,
this is what we’ve got here. Now when you’re first thinking about putting a water feature
in you want to think about the location. So in this case we’ve got the back corner of
a yard and we’ve actually got a natural drop off to the yard back here from a high to a
low, so in this particular case it lends itself well to creating a little pond with a waterfall.
Now the two things – the most important thing to consider when you’re looking at creating
your water feature and for it to be where it’s going to require minimal maintaining
is that you want to make sure that you have some running water, so in this case whether
we have a waterfall that we’ve created or in other cases you can actually have a standing
fountain that constantly circulates the water. So what this does is it keeps the water aerated
and it will inhibit a lot of algae growth and things that can create pond scum and make
your pond look less than desirable. So once we’ve determined our location, then first
we want to dig the main basin. In this case our pond, now your depth is not as important
if you’re not going to put any type of fish in here. Now if you are going to put some
fish, you want to talk to your local aquatic shops and check and see what they recommend.
But typically the depth of your pond is going to be anywhere from eighteen to twenty-four
inches. Now in this case we’ve got about a twenty-four inch depth in the middle, and
then we’ve actually got a rim around where we can come back and add some plants. So that’s
at about a twelve inch depth. And then we’ve got a rise in that. So once we had dug this
out, we’ve actually put a rubber liner that runs the entire length of the pond and actually
up into the waterfall. So this will allow you to have a water tight feature all the
way up to your spout. We’ve got a pump that’s submerged in the deepest part of the pond
with a hose that runs up and supplies water – pumps water from the pond up to the top
of the waterfall. So and as long as you have your water that’s running about the only thing
you’ll have to do with this type of pond is come in with a skimmer and get leaves and
debris that may collect on the surface. So I’m Tim Gipson and that’s how to create a
mostly self-maintained water feature in your yard.
