Home Improvement & Maintenance Tips : How to Determine the Pitch of Your Roof

Hi I’m Tim Gipson, and I’m going to show you
how to determine the pitch of your roof. Now what I’ve done here is I’ve just set up a
little mock up of what a roof would look like. Just to show you better how to do this. What
you will need to determine the pitch of your roof is a carpenter’s square, and a level,
and then of course a pencil to write some things down with. What we will do is if we
were up on a roof, what we’re going to do is we’re going to take the carpenter’s square
and the level and we want to hold it up against the edge of the roof, and then we want to
make sure that holding it level until we can determine -let’s see, there we go. So we’re
going to hold it level to the roof and in this case I know that from here to the end
of my level is fourteen inches. So that is my run. And then I’m going to measure my rise,
which down here with holding a level is eight inches. And how you determine your pitch is
rise over run. So I said the rise was eight inches, and the run was fourteen inches. So
if this was my actual roof, then I would determine that my rise over run would be in this case
four over seven. Now typically what we do is we convert that to twelve inches on the
bottom. So I would want to convert this so that I could say I have so much rise over
every twelve inches. But for practical purposes we’ll just say that the pitch of this roof
it rises four inches for every seven inches that we go in. So if I do a simple conversion,
then I can come back in I can actually get my rise over my twelve inch run. And I’ll
leave that math to you to actually figure out. But that’s how we can determine the pitch
of our roof. I’m Tim Gipson with some tips on how to determine the pitch of your roof.
