Home Maintenance & Repair Tips : How to Unclog a Shower Drain

Hi, I’m Tim Gipson, and I’m going to show
you how to unclog shower drains. Now, when we have a clog in our shower drain, usually
I have standing water in here. It usually means some hair and different things have
gotten down in there. Now, you can use a commercial product that maybe has a gel base or something
like that that’ll actually penetrate down in though that water and will clear that clog.
And you want to let that sit. Just follow the directions. Some of them, you may just
sit for 15 minutes. Some of them may need to sit overnight. Whatever you use in chemicals,
make sure that you do run the water faucet on hot for at least 10 minutes so you can
clear any of those residual chemicals out. Now, there are some things that we can use
that we just have around the house. We can use baking soda and white vinegar. And to
use that, we’ll pour about a cup of the baking soda down the drain, and then follow it up
by a cup of the vinegar. That’ll actually create a foaming action that’ll break up that
clog. And then after we let that sit for about 10 minutes, we’re going to take a pot of hot
water and it’s also not a bad idea to go ahead and put a cup of salt in that hot water to
create a brine solution. And we’re going to pour that down the drain and let that sit
for about five minutes, and then, again, run the faucet for about 10 minutes to clear any
residual out. And that should take care of it. Now, if you have some stubborn clogs,
you can take a clothes hanger like this and make a hook, open your drain, and reach down
in there to clear that clog. Now, if it’s a…if that clog is way down in the pipes
where you can’t quite reach it and you can’t dislodge it, you may need to get a plumber
snake, which you feed down in there and twist, and it’ll go down there and break that clog
up. And that’s all there is to it. So I’m Tim Gipson, and that’s how to clear shower
drains.

  1. I am a Licensed master Plumber- This is a "hack" way of unclogging a drain. Simply snake it out and you will not be back pouring household and dangerous chemicals in your drain. Remember- If you pour drain cleaner or liquid plumber and it does not break up the clog ( which is usually the case), it will back up and burn your skin- DO NOT LISTEN TO THIS GUY! TIM: IF YOUR OUT HERE, DONT GIVE ADVICE UNLESS YOU ARE A MASTER PLUMBER

  2. dashasohn :: Some of us don't have a snake and can't afford to call a "master" plumber everytime the bathtub clogs. Not to mention that he mentions running hot water to clear chemicals and that you may need a snake.

    Thanks for the video!

  3. Whenever i notice my drains starting slow a bit (every 3-5 months or so) i boil several gallons of water and dump in down, voila drain speed picks up. My shower usually clogs up right under the stopper with hair and soap and i use small needle pliers and pull it out. The idea is not to wait for it to clog but pay attention when the water slows a bit and do something about to avoid clogs. This maintenance only takes a few minutes several times a year and anyone can do it.

  4. It was late at night and didn't fill like going to Wal-Mart. The baking soda, vinegar and hot salty water did the trick! Thanks!!!
