# How to INSTALL an Internal DOOR –DIY

Yes is this recording? Hello my friends,
this is Bahiano with Bahiano Reno. Today we’re gonna show you how to install an interior door and how to get the right measurements when you buy a door, that
way there’s no mistake and a few little tricks. Let’s work. Yes, I’m gonna show you how
to measure the rough opening so that you would get the right door for your house. We have the height. This is 82″, and this is a 2×4 jamb, so what we have here is 4.5″. I will show you the measurements so that you can find the right door. So this jamb is 4.5″, when you are at the hardware store, check the jam of the doors (to make sure they match the opening). Here we have 4.5″. The height is 81.75″. It’s smaller than the opening, this way we have room to move it around in cases it is out of level. You could have a gap of about 0.5-0.75″ which is good to work with. In this case, the measurement of this door here is 29.60″. The size of the opening is 30.25″. so we have a lot of space to play with this door. Once you have all your measurements, you’re need to check which side the door will swing. In this case here we have a left-swing door. The door will swing to the left against the wall, and one indication of this is that we have the light switch on this side. Once you open it, you want to be able
to reach to the switch to turn on the light, so this is a good indication
of where you need the door to open. And let’s work! When you buy the door, it
usually comes with a paper like this one. With all of the measurements: this is the
width of the door, 28″, and 80″ in height. And this is the jamb. This indicates whether it’s a left or
right swing. This is “LL” that stands for left. If you have a right-swing door, you’ll see and “R”. Okay once you have your door, now it’s time to check for the level on this side where we’re going to install the hinge of the door. We have to make sure that this is leveled. This is out of level, so what
going to use some shims to level this door. And if you don’t know what a shim is, I will show you. It’s thick at the bottom, and the top is a little bit narrow. Once we have the jamb installed, we will show you, but the idea is that we put two pieces and just push them
against each other and cut. Make sure it is squared. And then you push it in
as much as you need. I know this is out of level, the space that I need here is about a half inch, so this is less than a half inch.
I’m just going to nail it on That way it’s easier for me to put
next piece up. I’m just using a Dewalt nail gun. 18V battery old timer.
I’m using 1.5″ nails. The reason that I’m doing this is so it’s easier for me to put shims because I can
I get another shimmy here and this way this one hold on place. I just have to
worry about one shim. The new door either comes with a screw or piece like this to hold it in place. So we need to remove it. This is just a screw on. Nothing much to it. And this can be discarded. Okay, now we’re going to put this door in place and see how it’s gonna fit alright, I’ll just grab a few screws. I’m going to use my leveler to place the door jamb flat on the drywall. You can use anything flat just to make sure the jamb and opening are leveled. Here I’m just using a drywall screw gun. You don’t need more than that, this is just
what I have right on the hand right now. So this is what we can use, but we can use a drill or any other tools. These are 2.5″ screws. I’m going to use the shims to level the door, and we’ll see how it looks. I just put one screw on the bottom just to hold it for now. This is about leveled, so I’m just going to put a single screw on top and then to make sure I have it
straight, just gonna check this one. I’m jut going to put a shim here to fill in this gap as you guys can see. I don’t need it to be this wide, so I’m just going to cut this one in half. I’m using a utility knife to cut it, but you can just just about anything. We’re going to have one shim on each side, then we’re going to push them until they are tight. You can bang on it a little bit, but not to much. Before I put anymore screws, I’m going to check the door from the other side because in this case we want the door to be tight to the floor. So I can show you guys what I’m looking for here. What I’m looking is to see if the gaps are the same on the top part of the door. I just want to see if the door is squared, if the space on this side
is the same on this side. I can see that the left side has less of a gap. We’re going to push this side of the jamb up This way the gap will increase from there. In this case, I’m going to push it up using my hand, and if it doesn’t work, I’ll use this small crowbar. Oh yeah, it went up with the hand, but I’m still going to use the crowbar. Yes, this is way better than before. The gap is the same on both sides so we are good. We’re just gonna screw it on place, put few more shims, and we’ll be good to go. we’re gonna see if this is straight enough to see if we can finish the trim. We’re just gonna use the leveler and gonna make sure it is straight with the drywall. We have a little piece of drywall sticking out ,I’m just gonna I’m just gonna cut it where I’m gonna put the shim. I’m just gonna use the knife
again. What we’re going to do down here is similar to what we did on top. We want the same gap at the top that we do at the bottom. So I’m going to push the shim in until we have the same distance. We’re going to put one screw at the bottom to make sure that this is nice and straight. Last time I used the leveler But now I’ll show you how you can use this piece to measure, you can use anything with a straight edge. Nice and straight to put the shim in.
Now that we have this in place, there’s one more thing that we have to do. I’m just going to close the door. The gap all look good. We want to make sure that the door is touching the jamb. We want to make sure that the gap at the top and the bottom are the same. In this case is the gap on the bottom is
a little bit bigger. So what I’m gonna do in here is I’m going to remove the screw and move the jamb a
little bit this way that way you have the same gap. I’ll show you how to do it. I’m not too worried about this gap in the middle here because the door might be a little bit bent. I just want to make sure the top is tight and bottom is tight and then I will put my screws back. This door looks nice and good so we’re
gonna put some more shims and some more screws to make sure that they’re
gonna stay on place and give some support for the jamb. We’re going to put some extra shims on this side since this is where it’ll hold all of the weight. of the door. This side will be hard for me to reach with my hand in there so I’m
gonna put one shim on this side all the way in. That way I would have something to grab
from both sides. Now we just put some screws. I’m just gonna check to see if everything is good. The gap on the top looks good. The gap on this side looks perfect. Now that we’ve done the
final check and everything looks good, we’re going to cut the shims. I’m just going to use a utility knife to cut it. I’m just going to score it a few times from both sides and then they just brake off. We’re done with this door here, everything
looks good. We cut the shims and the door is closing good what is left here to do is to install the lock and put the trim around it, but
that would be another day and another video These are the shims we just used and cut from the door. I’m just going to take them and use them on another door. Nothing goes to waste. Okay, now you guys know how to install a door. If you have any questions, let me know in the comments. I will reply to all of the comments, so don’t be shy leave your comments. And thank you very much. Next time we’re gonna show you how to install the trim. And the work that’s being done here is on the half-duplex renovation project, we’re doing updates, making many videos for it. And we will link all of those videos on this one. Thank you guys, and see you later.
