How to Paint an Exterior Wall : Caulking When Painting an Exterior Wall

Hello, my name is Grady Johnson, and I’m a
professional painter. Today, I’m representing ExpertVillage.com. Now, we’ve done all of
our spot priming, and we’ve allowed that primer to dry. That’s very important. Allow at least
two to three hours for it to dry completely before you start your finish prep work. Now,
we’re into the finish prep, and the first part of that is caulking. Now, we went over
the types of caulk to buy, but remember, you are going to have to cut the tip of your caulking
and poke it down here. This is just a tip that needs to flow through and there will
be a seal on this part right here . Now, to do that everybody tries different things.
My caulking gun actually comes with a poker and a cutter. I don’t really like the cutter
though because it doesn’t cut it. It cuts it straight across. For myself, as a painter,
and most people will want to cut it at an angle. Now, to do that I recommend you use
either your putty knife or your five-on-one tool, and pop that off at an angle, or just
use a pocket knife. That’s, of course, the easiest way, and it has the sharpest edge.
So, get yourself a nice, sharp edged pocket knife, usually one you keep in your pocket.
And then, just cut that tip right off. Now, don’t take off too much to begin with. Be
sure you get, don’t take off too much. And, you want to kind of hold your knife at an
angle and just cut down and shave it off. And you see, I didn’t get enough. But, the
hole opened up a little bit. But, I need to open that up a little more. So, I’ll shave
off a little bit more. And, it’s still too small, so I come back a little more and shave
it on down. Now, that’s looking pretty good. Alright, now I think a little less of an angle
on that. We’ll try one more time. There we go. And, we want to shave that on down. There
we go. And you’ll see now that we have a nice angle that we can work with. And now, we’re
going to have to pump the diaphragm that’s underneath the tip because that’ll release
the caulking. Now, my caulking gun has a poker on it. So, I’m going to go ahead and poke
a hole in this. And, you want to do that two or three times to make sure that you got it
good. Okay, we’ve got that. So now, I’m going to go ahead and clean that off. Now, this
is important. This caulking will build up on your caulking gun, and even though they’re
not real expensive, you don’t want to have to replace them every time you do a job. It’s
easy just to wipe it off when it’s wet than when it’s on there. It takes a little bit
more work. Then, you want to poll this all the way back. Then, you see, I’m going to
set this set screw where I want it. Push the trigger, and pull the gun all the way back.
Then, put the tube in there, and then just go ahead and tighten that up. Alright, not
it’s caught, and you see a little bead will come out the top because it’s working. And,
just wipe that off with your finger or your rag. Alright, now we’re ready to get to work.
