How to Paint an Exterior Wall : Scraping When Painting an Exterior Wall

Hello, my name is Grady Johnson and I’m a
professional painter and today I’m representing expertvillage.com. Now I want to talk a little
bit about scraping an exterior wall. Now, when you’re scraping an exterior wall, be
sure that you have a firm grip on your scraping tool, putty knife or five in one tool. If
your hand slips off of your putty knife, not only will you drop the tool, you’re going
to scrape your hand on this rough surface. Just where it’s chipping off, use it like
a chizzle and take off those loose areas. You don’t need to worry about places where
it’s not going to come off, because that’s sticking and the primer will hold down these
rubbed areas. Scrape that all out where it’s rough and you want to get all that loose paint
off of there and do the best you can do get all of it. You’ll probably go over this more
than one time, then you want to dust the area you just cleaned. Now, one thing to remember
when you are scraping or dusting for that matter, don’t get your fingers too close to
this surface. The backs of your fingers will get rough, you can see one cut I got there
already. This surface is very, very rough, you want a firm grip on your putty knife or
scraping tool or five in one so that when push it your hand doesn’t come off and tear
up on this surface. Same thing when you’re dusting, keep that away from the wall, don’t
get in close cause you’ll rip up the backs of your fingers and this is how you scrape
an exterior wall.
