How to Paint Roof Eaves : Caulking Roof Eaves

Hello! My name is Grady Johnson and I’m a
professional painter, and today I represent expertvillage.com. Now we’re going to talk
a little bit about caulking the exterior eaves our house. Caulking is real important because
it seals up those cracks so that bugs don’t get it in and it makes it look like a brand
new job if you’ve sealed everything up really, really well. Cracks will show and it’ll look
like black lines on a finished coat so go ahead and caulk everything up and it’s going
to look nice and tight and brand new. Go ahead and cut your caulking gun at an angle. You
can see here I cut this tip at a little bit of an angle. The reason for that is that it
makes it easier to work the beat. We’re going to pop the diaphragm with the little poker
we have here or stick we find on the site. When you’re getting a gun, just be sure that
it a good feed action. If the trigger doesn’t stick and it moves the plunger well, you’ve
got a good caulking gun. If you hold the gun away from the wall, that’s this end away from
the wall, that’s going to give you tighter bit so that it’s real small to handle some
of these real narrow little cracks. When you get into these giant big cracks like this
one, then you’re going to want a bigger bit. That’s when you want to point that in, the
tail of the gun, towards the wall so that it opens up and really lets out a lot more
caulking flow out. We’re going to do this narrow bit in here like this. Once we have
that in here, we work that out with our finger and pull that line on out. Now remember we’re
going to take all these ridges off so it smoothes out. Mine was a little narrow so I’m going
to put a little more up in there. Fill that in a bit and then go ahead and smooth that
on out. Okay, that looks really good. Now that I got that smoothed out, then I’m going
to work on some of these bigger cracks like this big one here. That’s when I want to hold
this away from the wall and really get some caulking up in there. You can see that’s just
filling that up nicely. You can see that’s filling it up. You notice that’s leaving a
ridge right along here so we want to wipe that on out to get it nice and smooth. You
want to get really smooth and then I can actually work that bit in there where it needs to go,
then bring this bit on over here. Grab that from the corner and then pull that on out.
Once you’ve got that done, just even that out with your finger. Well that’s looking
good. Now I’m going to pull down the rest of this sides of some of these larger cracks,
but these are the things that you need to remember when you’re caulking the exterior
eaves on your house.
