How to paint your exterior door with Inspire DIY Kent Thomas

Hey guys in this video I’m going to show you how to repaint your door. Let’s get started. If you’re wanting to change your door handles and locks at the same time now is a good time to remove them so I’ll just pop them under there, and that’ll support the weight of the door when we unscrew it And then rest it against your body and lift it up and move it away I’m going to sand it with 120 grit, followed by 240 grit and we’ll see how that looks then I’m gonna paint it, but first up I’m going to put masking tape over anything that I don’t want to get paint on A good paint job guys is all in the prep work, as far as prep work goes… we’ve sanded the door down, any little dents and chips and stuff, we’ve filled them up with just a water-based filler When that’s dried, we’ve sanded it off now the door is ready for painting So the best way to attack this is to paint inside all these recesses, around the outside, and around the door handle first And then finish off doing the flat surfaces that are easy to get to Thanks for your help, put it there, high five! Ruby and I got two coats of paint on the front door.. it looks a little bland So what we’re thinking of doing is putting a bit of color in the.. it’s called a sticking and I had to google that. but it’s got these decorative Routed out parts between the panels just to give it some detail and break up the monotony of this beige paint, either mask up around the sticking and spray it, or we’ve got some Jasper in a pot. So we’re just going to paint that on I found it really hard to get paint just inside the recessed part and not on the rest of the door So for a second attempt What I’ve done is just paper and masking tape all the way around where I don’t want paint and I’ve done another layer All in the name of trial and error, let’s take the tape off and we’ll see how it looks Well, it was worth doing that experiment it’s a little bit… Fluffy, you can see a little bit of paint has bled through under the masking tape around these edges If we were super fussy, and I’m not going to be we could get a roller a short nap roller with not a lot of paint on it with some beige, and we could roll across the top any little bits of Jasper the dark color that’s bled through We’d be able to cover that up, but you know what? That looks pretty good. And unless you’re looking closely you’re not going to notice so I’m happy with that, let’s hang the door up Hanging it up is just a reverse process of how we took the door off at the start We’re yet to check this door… sometimes after you’ve painted the door If you’ve gone crazy and done some seriously thick layers of paint. Your door has actually become a bit wider You know, you’ve got two or three layers of paint extra on each side and it can bind on your door jamb. So just be mindful just paint it, maybe two coats and just thick enough so that it You end up with a nice finish and it covers up the existing color, but don’t go crazy on how thick your paint is Thanks guys for watching this video on how to paint a door, hopefully it was helpful, if you found the video helpful at all Give it a thumbs up.
