How to Patch Small Holes in the Wall – Ace Hardware

Hi, I’m Lou Manfredini, Ace’s Home Expert with a home maintenance tip. We’re going to be talking about patching holes in your walls. Now there can be a variety of issues you have to deal with so I have a couple of examples right next
to me. A smaller little nail popper hole that maybe in the dry wall or plaster or a larger hole that can be caused by a doorknob hitting the wall you’re just not quite sure how to do it yourself. Well it’s very simple. Let me show you. It starts with the smaller hole with a little lightweight spackle. It’s as simple as grabbing that tub and a little putty knife like this and just applying
a little bit of that spackle right into that hole and smoothing it out with the spackle and just getting it as smooth as possible and then what you want to do is allow that
to dry typically just a few hours or so and then you can go ahead and touch up that spot and you’re done. Now if you have larger holes as I mentioned, a doorknob that kind of pokes a hole in here. Now in the past,
you had to make the whole bigger use some wood and get there, use some screws and the whole nine yards but now there are these metal patch kits that
are available and it makes repairing larger holes like this very simple. You just peel it away, there’s actually a self-stick metal piece on here along with some fiberglass around the exterior of it. You apply that patch right to the drywall or plaster as you can see it stays there perfectly. Now here you’re going to need some joint compound and this is what you patch drywall with and again with that putty knife You’re going to take a little bit of that joint compound and apply it over the patch. Just a nice thin layer to actually set the patch. Now once you set this you’re done for twenty four hours. Tomorrow you’re going to come back and apply
another coating on this and when you put it on there you’re getting a little wider because what
you’re trying to avoid is a large hump on that wall. So you apply
it, making it wide. Remember, I’m rushing through this so that you can see how it’s going to look but this is going to take place twenty four hours after that first the first coating. We’re going to let that dry and then you’re going to come back and do a final coat and when
that’s complete You take something like a little sanding sponge sand it away, get it nice and smooth, You might need a little bit more touch up but then you’re ready that touch up the paint and you’re done. It’s that simple to take care of your home and if you need more advice you just need to go to your local Ace Hardware
store.
