How to Teach your Dog to Walk on Leash

Today’s video is sponsored by bark box if your dog is less than ideal on leash today I’m going to show you what to do to get your dog walking like a model canine citizen click thumbs up for more pleasant walks with your dog Subscribe to my channel and pick up a copy of my book dog training revolution now Let’s hear from Celeste and her dog Biscuit. My name is Celeste. My dog’s name is biscuit She’s one year old and she is a Bernese Mountain dog I’ve always thought that they’re the cutest dogs in the whole world my husband proposed to me on a Bernese Mountain dog farm it was probably the best moment I could ever imagine Biscuit’s very friendly and she loves other dogs But sometimes that can be an issue when we’re trying to walk around the park or even down the street She tends to pull really hard, and she’s a very strong big dog and sometimes I have issues keeping her under control She’s very curious. This kid just really loves eating dirt Zack, please help make walking more fun for biscuit and me alright biscuit our mission is clear Let’s see what we can use in our new bark box for today’s lesson I’m going to tell you guys how [you] can get a free bark box in just a second prime rib dinner I’ll get it for you if you just look at these They send you the most unique toys and treats every single month I have to take the plastic off you can’t just eat it with the plastic on come on This is great for keeping your dog engaged in training, which is key for getting faster results Or just because dog [champagne] is it squeak? Oh? Yeah, look at that. You got to shake it now If there’s something in your box that your dog doesn’t love they’ll send you something your dog does love your dog’s happiness [they’re] Priority I love using [dirty] strips on training a lot of specifc for leash lessons because you can break them up really easily And they’re usually really tasty the smell really has their attention for sure. I’m going to give her one [I] think these will be perfect for a walk you can get your free bark box with a six or a twelve month [subscription] by going to barkbox .com / Zak George , did you know that many Bernese Mountain dogs are so strong that Historically they’ve been used as draft animals to pull carts and often when a dog is bred for a physical trait like strength It’s extra important to teach them good Leash walking [habits] set aside time to work with your dog on leash training before it’s time to go somewhere Preparation makes all of the difference before I get started with today’s lesson I have to make sure that I can get biscuits attention on me in this outdoor Distracting environment. She’s great with [sit]. That’s a good sign. Look at me. Yes good Now can I get her to look at me [without] a treat in my hand let’s find out? Look at me. Oh she’s taller, and we’re right here on this pond. There’s birds everywhere I think she’s doing exceptional so far look at me It looks good check that means she’s able to focus on me so that we can start to work on our training a Huge part of having a dog that behaves well on leash is being able to get their attention on you when they’re distracted and just Being outside right now is enough to distract almost any dog if your dog is it yet reliably looking at you outside while around minor distractions keep working on that first before moving on I’ll have a video in the description that will help you since look at me look so good I want to see if we can now do that while moving around again in an outdoor environment. That’s super key biscuit Look at me come here Good Good job [nice] work up here. Oh There’s [birds] up here. Look at me so far She’s reacting very intelligently she’s acknowledging the distractions, but it’s not throwing her off so much look at this no tension on the leash So far. This is exactly where you want to be in other words You don’t want to wait for your dog to start pulling on the leash [to] then correct them and scold them for pulling it’s so much better to motivate them to want to walk nicely rather than using special tools like choke , prong or electric collars teaching your dog to think from the inside out will always be far more potent and in the beginning stages of teaching your dog to walk nice on Leash It’s super important to use lots of treats because they give you that opportunity to build Communication with your dogs those treats are what keep them focused on you and over time as they become more used to walking with you In distracting environments you won’t need the treats anywhere near as much if at all . There she is acknowledging a bird Up here look at me good. So she acknowledged the bird. I was able to get her attention on me so far It’s been smooth [sailing] with biscuit, but now let’s do something that resembles more of a real world walk I’m going to attempt [to] walk all the way from down there back here and hopefully biscuit will comply. Let’s see biscuit up Yeah, yeah, good [I] don’t know if you could see that her pace started to increase a bit But I wanted to prevent her from pulling so I asked her to look at me and she did Now celeste says that biscuit isn’t exactly reliable when she encounters another dog on a walk today I’ve got my dog trainer friend Angie and her dog Sonny here to provide a more significant Distraction for biscuit of course if you don’t have a friend with a dog to help you out it might be more practical to train In a park where [people] might be walking their dogs or even outside the perimeter of a fence dog park and now she sees her, look At that that’s interesting let’s see how biscuit does when she’s a little bit closer to Sonny now We’re getting tension on the leash right now. She’s pulling so much. [I] can’t get her attention on me over here Hey pay attention to me. We have a very odd-looking duck. She’s focused on right now too . Come on, girl. Let’s go over here I’m not having much success here that means I need to probably move back a little bit farther if your dog won’t look at you or Sit when you ask them to that probably means you’re too close to something they’re distracted by so my goal Now is to be able to get biscuit to pay attention me and the president of Sonny look at me fine great I’m able to get her eyes on me about [ten] [twelve] feet between the two of us biscuit up here Look at me sit Yes, good work, so a little bit closer that time this is exciting Let’s go over here, sit Look at me great sit Real tough war right here, but I think she might have it in her , will you sit ? Yes, if you can get your dog to sit in the presence of something. They’re distracted by that probably means They’re pretty receptive to listening to you and taking Direction if however They won’t do something basic like a sit lie [down] or look at me Well that probably means you’re not ready to work with them in that type of situation just yet It would totally be fine to have them go and say hi to each other But if you’re really walking your dog you don’t necessarily want to stop and have your dog read Every dog plus that may condition then to just pull towards every dog they see [alright] I’m ready to go on to the next step here things that [move] are very often more Distracting to dogs and if we have sunny walk back and forth here it might be a little bit more Challenging to get biscuit to pay attention to me let’s find out she’s not paying attention to me Let me see if I put the [treat] [at] her nose be still not paying attention If she’s very intrigued, but she is sitting so I’m actually still gonna reward because there’s some compliance going on over here You can see that she starts to lunge [Toward] sunny. We don’t want that sit Good give me Up here. Yes good job. Just a couple of feet away, and I’m able to get Biscuit’s attention on me This is great. [how] about a lie down? Oh? Even better and the reason I’m having her lie down here is just to demonstrate that she’s compliant in this distracting scenario This is fantastic this way yes, oh excellent Look at this all attention on me none on the other dog come here Well not quite none, but that’s acceptable will you sit? Will you look at me? I love it. Let’s find out how biscuit [reacts] when Sonny bark she’s definitely Acknowledging the bark I see nothing wrong with that the most important thing Is that she’s paying attention to me in the presence of a barking dog? See that she barks and she immediately looked at me I didn’t even have to ask her and that’s really what we’re working towards showing your dog what to do before? They’re surprised by something is the ideal way to set them up for success [click] thumbs up for biscuit isn’t she great [and] how about Sonny and Angie, [too] They did a great job get your free bark box when you sign up for a 6 or 12 month subscription Thank you to our [crowdfunders] on Patreon Make sure to subscribe to my channel And pick up a copy of my book in written or audio form all the links will [be] in the description you

  2. I am SO of appreciative of all your knowledge that you share on your channel. Thank you for inspiring me on the continued training of my dog. I have been pulled down 7 times due to my dog's excitement when she is on a leash. I am so grateful.

  3. Very glad this dog isnโ€™t a puppy. All the videos on YouTube are with puppies. I have a 4 year old dog and she canโ€™t walk on a leash…

  4. Hello Zak. Love your videos. I have a question. My husband complaints that our dog Kira bighting at his feet during walking her. Well she does it playfully. He walks her out to pee and while they walk she tries to jump ahead and bight playfully at his feet like if she tries to trip him over. Its annoying. She tried to do it a few times with me but i cut it out right away. She listens to me a bit better. She is still not a good lish walker. She is already 2 years old. She pulls. I want to fix it. But how to also cut her bad behavior with bighting at my hubbies legs?

  5. Wait up ! Zaks comment has only 4 liked and look at others bro! I love you ! You trained my dog so well!

  6. I use a prong collar and an e collar for my Siberian husky and it has worked wonderfully. I've gone from her pulling me off my feet to her being at complete attention at my heel off leash haha.

  7. My advice use a harness put the leash between the front legs then off to the side it creates a little discomfort when the pull so when the start to simply stop walking untill you get them to sit then continue with them short leashed and to your side not in front of you they pull because they want to lead to the next destination you just need to assert and show the direction decisively. ๐Ÿ‘

  8. Right. But it isnโ€™t important to give a lot of treats. You can do it with (let me think): None?

  9. If I throw a toy at my Bernese mountain dog, she just looks at it, the looks at me, and lays back down and goes to sleep ๐Ÿ˜‚

  10. I gave it a like, I don't have expert in back of my name and it's a good way to do it but as an owner of Berners for the last 20 years I can say it's so much easier with a choke. I don't know why so many people are opposed to the choke.

  11. Iโ€™m just starting my page .. i also train.. come check me out subscribe and hit the notification button if ya like what ya see!!

  12. How about using the โ€œFocusโ€ command instead of the โ€œLook at meโ€ command. Itโ€™s easier

  13. My new puppy is a Bernese mountain dog Husky mix and he also loves eating dirt ๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚ i feel the pain of being like oh no please dont eat the dirt

  14. Biscuit is a super mellow dog compared to the bucking bronco Iโ€™m trying to walk with. The only way to control him is to pin him down.

  15. My malinois dog get so exicted when she is out to the point that the treats doesn't even have any effect on her i don't know what to do to get her attentions without treats

  16. ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ‘

  17. I can't even get my dog to walk straight. ๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚ But I kinda enjoy it because he's a puppy but it's time to make him learn how to walk.

  18. if you dont walk him for at least a month, thats the real reason why he pulls, he's excited and felt relief, but when you walk him everyday until he's tired, he will behave on himself even without treats

  19. I need a training video with a dog that ACTUALLY pulls. Biscuit is such a well behaved dog compared to my dogs ๐Ÿ˜‘

  20. My dog is an exotic bully and he loves to just run alot and so he pulls me for no reason and he is soo strong omg. Check that breed out its an exotic bully and see if you like them

  21. He doesn't have any videos with dogs that are poorly behaved. My beagle pulls through her collar to the point of choking. How am I supposed to start? It's pretty aggravating when he starts with an already well behaved dog

  22. I had to get one of those collars with spikes on it and a harness. She sometimes escapes out of both lol but over time sheโ€™s gotten more tame ๐Ÿ™‚

  23. What if the dog doesn't take treats because it's so distracted and pulls? ๐Ÿ˜‚ Really trying hard with our 16 week old pup, he's still a little scared outside and we are out often ๐Ÿ™ˆ

  24. My dog wants to bolt out the door at the beginning of the walk, but after it heโ€™s calm as ever and walk with no tension by my side

  25. There are seeming legitimate sites on the regular web that purport to be for ok purposes, but our sources tell us that there are many (ahem) websites that are sado-domination "dog" solicitation sites. These sites emphasize the entrainment of animals (which, for sickos, refers, to their human subjects they debase as dogs and other animals.)

  26. Love your u tube broadcasts, wish you were in Australia, and your products. Now working with my spaniel on talking and find this so helpful

  27. Bark box sucks… and no they donโ€™t… I sent multiple pictures and they didnโ€™t send me anything … I ended up having 2 a month for both of my pitbulls……. donโ€™t buy the box…. go with someone else….

Plus my pups DESTROYED every toy and โ€˜Kongโ€™ chewer in a matter of minutes…. go buy ANY treat that will give you the attention you are seeking from your dog….. con artist…. Iโ€™m not a pro at all but this is a joke….

  28. I am very fortunate to have a smart dog (Aussie/border collie). She learns very quickly but,… is more self-serving than interested in pleasing. So, I train her…and then, ( sometimes) in a week, she refuses to continue. Useful commands like "look at me, sit, come, heal, ring the bell, tug of war, & leave it" are tolerated but playing fetch, lay, quiet, play dead, and other tricks are quickly learned but abandoned due to annoyed dog. She still knows the training. Maybe I am asking too much but why isn't my dog more into the training. Better treats? PS…. Dog really isn't really very stomach oriented,… not really food oriented (weird right?). Maybe a disputed dominance outlook?

  29. This method also works with humans! Set up clear stimulus and response you want, and then immediately reward if you see your desired response.

  30. Is there a video for when your dog walks behind you and stops from time to time. I let my dog sniff at times but sometimes she stops for no reason. She wonโ€™t walk in front or by my side. Sheโ€™s 2 years. Help ๐Ÿ˜• please

  31. Serious. give me a break this is okay but you try that with my cattle dogs they will take you for a walk well more of a run. set the collar higher up on the neck base of the skull you have the collar back like that their instinct is to pull.

  32. We live in NYC & have an adorable 4 month old rescue (Long Haired Chihuahua &Terrier mix).Every street is busy & distracting plus we live in a smallish apartment. She pulls on leash like a Mack truck at only 5 pounds. Really need some help teaching her to walk in this insanely busy busy distracting (people not looking & on their phones/cars/trucks/delivery bike guys/loud noises, etc, environment. Thanx Bunny

  33. These videos are just to give hope. Watch videos that show the bad behavior and then the behavior change within one session with only speed up editing. You can only get that with training tools this guy is poopooing. Not all dogs respond to 100% positive training. You need a consequence at most 5% of the time.

  34. We got my our dog a few months ago, her old owner has dementia and we took her in. Thing is she's 11 and completely death. She barks and growls at other dogs and stops every second to sniff everything. Will these work if she can't hear me?

  35. Can you like use a dog who actually pulls cuz itโ€™s so frustrating trying the same techniques on my puppy who pulls a lot

  36. Take that well behaved dog home and show this with a dog that pulls hard and will NOT except treats outside when distracted.

  37. Zak just goes "look at me". Meanwhile I could be literally dying with fireworks shooting out of my body and my dog would still ignore me.

  38. I see in all these great videos you feed the dogs 60-100 treats. Iโ€™m getting a cockapoo puppy in just a few days and was wondering are those training treats that you feed them a lot in these vids kibble or are they actual dog treats that you feed them hundreds of?
