How to Use Plumbers Putty | Repair & Replace

Hi, I’m Vance and welcome to Repair and Replace. Plumbers putty is a clay like substance used to make
water tight seals on faucets and drains. It’s not an adhesive and doesn’t bond to surfaces
so it’s easy to apply and remove. First its best to clean both surfaces that
will make contact with the putty. Take a little bit of putty and roll it into a snake. Place the putty around the area you are sealing,
forming a complete ring. Now install the piece and apply pressure. The excess putty should
ooze out over the edge. Next tighten with a wrench
to lock it into place. Now use a cloth to clean the excess putty,
and test for any leaks. Plumbers putty is useful but is only
intended for areas that are not visible. It should never be used in plastic or
granite as it might leave a stain. As a rule of thumb, plumbers putty should
never be used with pressurized connections. Threaded metal or plastic fittings
require teflon tape or pipe joint compound to make a good seal. Also when fusing two plastic pipes together,
ABS or PVC cement should be used instead. If you liked this and want to see more
