Interior Design and Merchandising

[ Music ] My name is Lori McBride,
and I teach interior design. The thing I love about interior design
I think is the relationships I have, not only with my students, but I’m
also a full-time interior designer. I have my own business. And I love helping not only students
but my clients realize their dream. I think the ideal student is the one
that’s eager to learn something new. They’re a student that may
have a creative bent to them, a little bit of interest in
art or the creative arts. But they don’t have to have
that skill set yet, you know, because it’s certainly something
that we teach here. There’s just a multitude
of jobs that are available to interior design students and graduates. While teaching the program, I have seen
students go on to designing airplane interiors. I’ve had a past student the last
semester who is designing car showrooms. But it can be something as simple
as being a showroom manager. We have an internship program that
all the students can go through, and within that program we
do connect them with jobs. We not only help prepare them for
interviews and building their portfolios, but also just connecting them in the field. So it’s a great opportunity for
them to engage in the industry, and the community college
helps them do just that. I think community college is
just the bargain of the century. It’s amazing what you get for the money
that you pay when you’re comparing tuitions, and the professors that are here
are all experts in their field. They have worked in the field. They have taught in the field. And they’re giving back. [ Music ]
