Interior Design with SketchUp – Set up your Template Scenes


Thanks for watching Interior Design with SketchUp. In this lesson we’ll continue setting up our template by adding a few useful scenes to really optimize our workflow. Welcome back as we continue to customize our template. So far we’ve adjusted our options and preferences, as well as created some new custom layers. So now we want to change our default style and also create a few other tabs that you will find really useful as you model. Depending on which default template you started with you will likely see that we have a ground plane and the sky visible in our model. And what we want to do is go ahead and get rid of that. To do this we’ll come over to our tray and open the scenes window. Go ahead and create a new scene by clicking on the plus icon here. I will call this one my “WORK” scene. You can call it “WORK” or “DESIGN” or “MODEL” Whatever you like, but this will be the scene that we spend most of our time in as we design and model our project You can give it a description if you like, but it’s not necessary. Alright, so we move on up here to the “styles” window and you can see that some of these default styles have a little green icon in the bottom right corner and this just indicates that it’s a fast modeling style, which is of course what we’re after. I’ll go ahead and pick this one here, the “shaded with textures” Alright now you can see that that turned off the sky and the ground plane as well as make our lines– our edges, a little more fine and crisp So now before we save this as our new “work” scene, go ahead and be sure that any section cuts and section planes are not visible. I’ve got little section plane icons up here so go ahead and turn that off. If you don’t have those icons you can come over here under the view tab and there you can uncheck any section planes, cuts, as well as make sure your shadows are turned off. and now back to our scenes tray, we can uncheck some of these items just making sure that we leave our active section planes, style and fog, and the shadows settings checked You’ll get his little dialog box pop, go ahead and save this as a new style. Just a little side note, this dialog box here– the scenes and styles warning, it can be kind of confusing So Matt Donley from the Master SketchUp channel has actually created a video explaining this in more detail. It’ll really help you make sense of it, so I’ve linked to that below so be sure and check that out too. Now I’ll just show you what this “WORK” scene does exactly. So if I come up to here and choose just any random style Let me pick this crazy “stained edges with frame” So now you can see that I have a completely different style and section planes and section cuts are both turned on now By now with this “WORK” scenes tab, just like that I’m back to my fast modeling style. Ok now we’ll create two separate tabs. One that will turn all of your layers ON, and one that will turn all of your layers OFF. So go ahead and create a new scene, and we’ll call this one “ALL ON” Go ahead and pop on over to your “Layers” window and make sure that all of your layers are in fact turned on. Then back in our scenes window, go ahead and uncheck everything except for “visible layers” And then go ahead and update that So now I’ll come into my “Layers” window and uncheck a few random layers Then I can just easily come over here to my “ALL ON” tab, give that a click, and they all come right back Now to create the “ALL OFF” tab. It’s the same idea except you want to UNcheck all of your layers You can quickly select all of these by clicking on the top layer and then holding down the shift key and selecting the bottom to do that all at once and then unchecking one And then just go ahead and update that scene and now we have separate tabs to turn all of our layers on and turn all of our layers off. Alright great, we’ve got just one more to create. We’ll call this “ORIENT FACES” You can go ahead and leave these “properties to save” just as they are but then we need to come up to the “styles” window to make a few changes there So here you can see you’ve got different settings for your edge style, and your faces, and the background and so on Let’s go ahead and turn “Edges” off Come over here to the face settings and here we have the standard colors for the front and the back of any faces that we create and to just quickly show you an example of this in case you don’t know what I mean by that I’ll come over here and quickly make a rectangle where you can see that the backside is a blue and that the front side is white All that we want to do for our “ORIENT FACES” scene is to make these two colors something that are easy to distinguish so go ahead and select two contrasting colors, whatever you like. And then set this style to “display shaded using all same” Alright great, now you can quickly tell which sides are the front and which sides are the back Now that we’ve updated the style for our “ORIENT FACES” scene, let’s go back under the “scenes” tab and update this Now that we’ve created all of our scenes, let’s go ahead and click around on the tabs to make sure that they all work properly Alright, that looks good so I want to explain why the “ORIENT FACES” scene is important for us in our rendering So let me come inside of the kitchen here and you can easily see that most of our faces are facing the correct direction except for part of our countertop here. Now this is important because when you are ready to send your model into a rendering engine such as Podium, Maxwell, Shaderlight, or in my case Thea Render it’s important that all of your faces are facing the correct way or it may not render correctly. If this is backwards, this section of the countertop may just show up as black If I have any reflections or glossiness set to my countertop, those may not render. It may just appear as a dull material. So let’s go ahead and correct this I’ll just click into this component and make sure all the faces are selected Give it a right click and go down to a “reverse faces” Alright, and now all of our faces are oriented correctly So the scenes that we’ve just created are the ones I use about 95% of the time If you would like to dig a little deeper with some more scenes, I highly recommend a book by Michael Brightman, called “The SketchUp Workflow for Architecture” He creates a few other scenes, which I don’t really use that often, but the book is full of so much other good information I really would recommend picking that up. Ok guys, our template is almost complete. In the next lesson I just want to quickly talk about our default tray and how we can best optimize these windows to really improve our workflow.
