Iowa City Update: 2019 National Night Out

Help us join together as a community to support
togetherness and take a stand against crime. Plus, throw on your favorite costume and head
to the library for a fun-filled comic celebration. And finally, history meets art. Learn how this wall pays homage to Iowa City’s
past. We have these stories and more coming right
up on Iowa City Update. Join a community effort to heighten crime
and drug prevention awareness while building partnerships between neighborhoods and law
enforcement. National Night Out is held on the evening
of Tuesday, August 6th in communities across the country. The celebration is a campaign that promotes police-community building partnerships while having fun. Neighborhoods in Iowa City will be hosting
events that include cookouts, contests, youth activities, and more! The times and locations are posted on our
website, icgov.org/NationalNightOut2019 Members of the Iowa City Police and Fire Departments
will be on hand, as well as Herky the Hawk and McGruff the Crime Dog. Find a celebration taking place near you and
join in on the fun. Kids can channel their creative side this
Thursday! Starting at 10 am, the Black
Hawk Mini Park will be turned into a Box Party. Put on by the Iowa Children’s Museum and
Iowa City Downtown District, this free event allows kids to construct a unique creation. The Box Party is based on the story “Not
a Box” by Antionette Portis about a rabbit freeing itself from the constraints of a regular
box. Stop by anytime before five that afternoon. The creativity continues on Friday with the
fourth annual Rock the Chalk! The event takes place this Friday in Downtown
Iowa City. The artists will begin working at 10 a.m.,
but the fun lasts until nine in the evening. There will be chalk art, crafts, games, music,
and a community chalk piece for everyone to participate in. In 2018, Rock the Chalk welcomed 60 community
artists and over 7,000 community members. We hope to beat that record, so make a trip
downtown to join in on the fun! The Iowa City Public Library is hosting their
second Lib Con this Saturday! This celebration of comics takes place from
ten in the morning until four in the afternoon. You can tour the Artist Alley, enter the Fandom
Room, and listen to speakers talk about cosplay and creating comic books. Multiple vendors will be located throughout the library for those to purchase comic-themed items. There will also be a child, teen, and adult
costume contest during the event, so make sure to come dressed up! The entire event is free, so don’t miss
this exciting opportunity to connect with the community while sharing your love of comics. A new addition has been installed in the Ped
Mall. A story wall entitled “A Mark Was Made”
is now up for display. The wall highlights the impact that 17 Iowa
Citians have had on the City from the 1830s until today. The people listed on the wall are those who
have participated in leadership, activism, and creativity for the Iowa City Community. The limestone wall features plaques with the
names of the honorees and their accomplishments. All the nominations were done through an online
poll conducted in 2017. Have a great week, everybody! We’ll see you next time on Iowa City Update.
