Mantle DIY: How to decorate your mantle

I’m getting my home ready for Christmas this year and I thought I would let you in on a few little secrets that we use all the time at the store when it comes to decorating your mantle! So the first thing I’m going to tell you about is how we hang our garland. Most people like to drape their garland
across the top of their mantle, but we like to attach our garland to the front of the mantle. I’ll show you how we do that. The second thing I’ll share with you is how to actually put more things on to your mantle! We’re going to talk about how you can actually extend the room that you have to work with! This ONE TIP is going to solve both problems! We like to put our garland on the front of the mantle & we do that by attaching nails in the front of the molding Now, if you don’t want to do that at your own house, I have a solution for you: What you’re going to do is go to your
local hardware store You can actually buy a pre-cut board or you can get them to cut it in the store for you Most of the boards come in 12 inch widths,
this one is a 16 inch width My mantle (like most mantles) is not
very deep on its own It’s only about 9 or 10 inches deep.
So this board will almost DOUBLE the depth! It also provides another piece that I can put nails on so I don’t have to damage my beautiful molding here. I’ve had to notch out a little bit here because we have a very unattractive (but necessary) extension cord on the top to plug in our TV, DVD player, & accessories. So all you’re going to do is slide it up on top of your mantle And make sure it’s evenly spaced The way that we’re gonna attach this piece onto our mantle is to screw it on there And — don’t worry — you’re going to put the screws towards the back of your mantle No one is ever going to see the back of your mantle and no one will notice the three little holes
that it will leave! So now that we’ve got our top onto our mantle, you’re going to put small nails across the front edge & sides of the wood. I always start in the center first & work my way out So what you’re going to do is find the center
of your garland first and attach it to the center nail and then work your way around each side. That way, you make sure that you’ve got enough garland to go around the whole mantle. So that’s really all there is to it You now have your garland securely fastened to the front of your mantle! The really neat thing is that you never notice that there is a board on top of your mantle! The garland completely covers it! Then you have all this room to work with so you can put anything you want up there! Whatever you want to do — it can now fit! The last really cool tip I want to share with you about putting this topper on your mantle is that you can actually get a cup hook, screw it in the bottom here,
& then use that to easily hang your stockings this year! I hope that helps you this year & have a
Merry Christmas!
