Mural Painted On Wall Separating School From Central 70 Project

WE HAVE THOSE SYSTEMS TO PROTECT US. Reporter: I’M KELLY WERTHMANN, COVERING COLORADO FIRST. FOLKS WILL NOTICE COLORFUL MURALS IN THE SWAN SEA YEA NEIGHBORHOOD ON THE WALLS NEAR THE — SWAN SEA NEIGHBORHOOD ON THE WALLS NEAR THE NEIGHBORHOOD THERE. STORY MAISON IS AT THE MURAL NEAR 46th AND COLUMBINE DODD. WHY IS CDOT — TODAY. WHY IS CDOT INVOLVED WITH THAT PROJECT? Reporter: WELL, ALAN DENVER PUBLIC SCHOOLS ACTUALLY ASKED CDOT FOR THE MURAL TO HELP SEPARATE SWAN SEA ELEMENTARY FROM THE CONSTRUCTION. BUT CDOT DECIDED TO TAKE IT ONE STEP FURTHER AND IN ADDITION TO GIVING THEM THEIR SAFETY BARRIER, THEY ALSO GAVE THEM A LITTLE BIT OF ART TOO. THIS 700-FOOT LONG WALL IS COVERED IN DOZENS OF DIFFERENT IMAGES, PAINTED BY OVER 30 ARTISTS. THE MAJORITY ARE LOCAL A FEW ARE EVEN FROM THIS NEIGHBORHOOD. CHILDREN PLAYING OUTSIDE FOR RECESS HAVE THE BEST VIEW OF THIS MURAL. SO THE ARTISTS WERE INSTRUCTED TO PAINT A SCENE REPRESENTING THE YOUTHFUL THEME OF PLAY. THIS COMMUNITY WILL HAVE TO DEAL WITH YEARS OF CONSTRUCTION DUE TO THE CENTRAL 70 PROJECT. CDOT SAYS THEY’RE GLAD THEY CAN ADD SOMETHING BRIGHT AND COLORFUL TO THE NEIGHBORHOOD THAT IS STILL FUNCTIONAL FOR THE SCHOOL. I LOVE THAT WE’VE FOUND A PLACE FOR ART AND SORT OF THE UNLIKELY LOCATION. YOU KNOW, THE SCHOOL HAD ASKED FOR THIS WILL AS AN EXTRA LAYER OF — WALL AS AN EXTRA PLAYER OF PROTECTION FOR THE STUDENT — LAYER OF PROTECTION FOR THE STUDENTS. IT’S GOING TO BE UP FOR A FEW YEARS AND TO HAVE SOMETHING BEAUTIFUL IS JUST A NEAT WAY TO PROVIDE THIS. Reporter: NOW THIS WHOLE WALL WAS PAINTED IN JUST A COUPLE OF DAYS. THE MAJORITY OF THE MURAL WAS FINISHED OVER THE WEEKEND WITH THE EXCEPTION OF THOSE FEW WHITE PANELS YOU SEE DOWN AT THE END THERE. THE ARTISTS LEFT THOSE BLANK SO THE STUDENTS CAN COME HERE AND HELP PAINT I WANT THEMSELVES. — IT THEMSELVES.
