New Mural at Vandalia Elementary

(sound of paint cans clinking) With multiple spray paint cans, an amazing
imagination and unmatched talent, artist Brian Lewis is creating something beautiful at Vandalia
Elementary School. Lewis is a nationally known graffiti artist. His work can seen in a lot of places, including
a number of building on Battleground Avenue in Greensboro. If you’ve ever driven by Red Cinemas, you’ve
seen his work. Vandalia media specialist Annie Benson contacted
Lewis to see if he’d be interested in painting a mural inside the school. He agreed and in the space of one weekend
transformed a wall from this…….to THIS! “Totally incredible. To watch him is like amazing because you’re
just sitting there thinking ‘I could never even draw this, let alone spray paint this!” “A lot of the stuff that he does is realistic
art right? So, what do we think that means and why do
we think it’s so special and so popular right now? Darion?” Students in Haley O’Brien’s class are
so impressed with the new mural that it’s inspired them to do further research on Lewis
and his art. “I think it was really surprising how he
was able to make it so realistic by only using spray paint.” “I think it looks really cool and um, it
looks really great.” “I really like it. I love to read and it’s encouraging me to
read more harder books.” That sentiment is exactly what educators here
were hoping for with the new mural. “I hope that they not only take away obviously,
they realize his talent and that you can do anything. Because he is just like anyone of us, but
also get inspired about reading and read the quote on it which says ‘reading can take
you anywhere and that they realize that all they have to do is step into this library
and they can go anywhere they want to go.” This has been a GCS Newsbreak.
