On Location with Councilwoman Laura Pastor – Artist Kevin Berry Interview

[SHOW THEME MUSIC]>>HI, I’M COUNCILWOMAN
LAURA PASTOR, AND I AM FROM DISTRICT 4. CURRENTLY, I AM STANDING IN THE
HOMESTEAD NEIGHBORHOOD ON 55th AVENUE AND EDGEMONT, AND WE ARE
HERE LOOKING AT A BEAUTIFUL PARK THAT YOU NEED TO COME SEE AND
LOOK AT. IT’S GREAT ART AND I’M HERE WITH
KEVIN, WHO IS THE ARTIST OF THE PARK.>>HELLO.>>KEVIN, HELLO, KEVIN, HOW ARE
YOU?>>I’M GREAT.>>WHAT DOES “WATERMARK” MEAN?>>WELL, IT’S A CELEBRATION OF
WATER AND A CELEBRATION OF THE WELL SITE THAT EXISTS HERE,
EVEN TODAY. THERE’S WATER UNDERGROUND, AND
WHAT WE’RE TRYING TO DO HERE IS EXPRESS THE ESSENCE OF WATER
AT THE SITE. WE’VE TRIED TO DO THIS THROUGH
VARIOUS MEANS, THROUGH THE ARTWORK. WE HAVE A DECORATIVE WELL CAP
THAT COVERS THE ORIGINAL SITE WHERE THE WELL USED TO BE, MANY
YEARS AGO, AND IT STILL IS. WE’VE KEPT THE ORIGINAL CONCRETE
WHERE THE WELL CAME OUT, AS A HISTORIC ARTIFACT. WE CREATED A DECORATIVE WELL CAP
THAT CAPS THE WELL.>>Pastor: MY UNDERSTANDING IS
THAT RIGHT HERE, RIGHT BEHIND YOU, IT USED TO BE A BURNT-DOWN,
OR IT WAS AN OLD PALM TREE, AND THAT’S WHERE YOU GOAT THE
INSPIRATION FOR THIS PIECE OF ART.>>THAT’S CORRECT, YES.>>HOW DID THE GLASS COME
INTO PLAY? WHAT MADE YOU DECIDE, OR HOW DID
YOU CHOOSE THE GLASS AND THE COLORS?>>I WAS INSPIRED BY THE SITE
ITSELF. MOST OF MY WORK IS
SITE-SPECIFIC. IT RELATES TO THE SITE. ORIGINALLY, THE SITE WAS KIND OF
AN EYESORE, WITH THE WELL EQUIPMENT, WHICH THEY REMOVED.
BUT THERE WAS A LOT OF BROKEN GLASS AND DIRT. THEN WE ALSO FOUND MARBLES AT
THE SITE, THAT INDICATED TO US THAT CHILDREN MUST HAVE PLAYED
HERE AT SOME TIME. I TOOK THOSE ELEMENTS INTO
CONSIDERATION, ALONG WITH A PALM TREE THAT ONCE EXISTED HERE,
BUT WAS DEAD. NOW, THE PALM TREE HAS A
BEAUTIFUL FORM, KIND OF AN UNDULATING FORM. WHAT I DID WAS I TOOK THAT FORM
AS AN INSPIRATION FOR THE SCULPTURE BEHIND ME, AND I
INVERTED IT SO THAT THE FORM COMES UP, ALMOST LIKE AN
ARTESIAN WELL SPOUT OF WATER COMING OUT OF THE GROUND. THAT’S WHAT THE INSPIRATION WAS
FOR THIS PARTICULAR PIECE CALLED “WATERMARK.”
>>Pastor: I APPRECIATE ALL YOUR GREAT WORK. APPRECIATE YOUR INSPIRATION, AND
“WATERMARK,” IT WAS AN ABANDONED, AS YOU SAID, OR
ABANDONED PIECE OF PROPERTY, WITH JUST DESOLATE, AND YOU
BROUGHT THE VIBRANCY AND THE CELEBRATION OF THE CULTURE AND
THE COMMUNITY AND THE HOMESTEAD COMMUNITY TO THIS SPACE. THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR YOUR
INSPIRATION.>>IT’S BEEN AN HONOR TO BE A
PART OF THIS PROJECT, AND I APPRECIATE BEING INVITED TO
PARTICIPATE IN THE VERY FIRST WELL SITE PROJECT FOR THE CITY. THANK YOU VERY MUCH.>>Pastor: THANK YOU,
REALLY APPRECIATE IT. I AM COUNCILWOMAN LAURA PASTOR
