Sanding Interior Walls Before Painting | Secrets of the Professional Painters

Sanding your interior walls. Why do you need to sand the interior walls
before painting? Welcome to Burning Questions. I’m Mark and that is your Burning Question
for the day. [ music playing ] Most of my clients tell me they hate sanding
and ask if it is an absolutely necessary step prior to interior painting? My answer is no! Not in all cases do you need to sand before
applying paint. I find that most people absolutely dread having
to do the prep work before doing the painting. So here is some advice. The finished look will require either no sanding
preparation or some preparation to the interior walls. That really depends on you! Let’s start with the walls in your home. If the walls are in pretty good shape, you
may not have to sand. What we generally recommend is putting 80
or 100 grit sandpaper on a pole sander just to knock down any sort of imperfection off
the walls. Usually in a 12 x 12 room, with the proper
tools, should only take you five or ten minutes to sand. If you are going to be painting over trim
work that has been previously painted or varnished, there are one of two ways to prepare the surface. You can either sand the surface and then remove
the dust with a tack cloth, or use a chemical agent that softens up the existing surface. Definitely at this point, make sure you read
and properly follow directions on the manufacturer’s bottle to achieve maximum results. When it comes to any work on a ceiling, I
generally recommend spot-sanding with a pole sander, especially if there’s a lot of imperfections
from say either fibers from the roller cover or chunks of dried paint that were not strained
out during the last application of paint. Oh, just a quick tip: make sure you purchase
a dust mask from the local paint store before sanding. Your lungs will appreciate it. So when it comes down to the next project,
as the old saying goes, beauty is in the eye of the beholder! Thanks again for joining us. Send in your Burning Questions and I will
put them out.
