Well one of the things that we do in Girls For A Change Is that we actually partner with women volunteers And asked them to coach a girl action team Sylvia: Hi, how are you doing
Angela: Wonderful Angela: How are you today
Sylvia: Thank you so much for having me Angela: Thank you for coming to our place This was really a unique opportunity We were having a meeting, just about Changing the well being of black girls in the city schools We’re looking to develop a relationship So that financial literacy will continue during the school year So we’re going to have a conversation I’m going to have a conversation with Angela And see how we can best partner to be able to meet that need So I want to change that narrative Right About spending But I believe that since it’s so rooted in us That we have to be intentional About what do we do every day that’s related to money Brother Hamilton heard the girls say That they thought a mural of black women Would be extraordinary to start the conversation For this wall being a blank wall To bringing it to something that the community enjoys Is really cool And also having the community walk by and be able to see the process Of honestly figures that look like them on the wall Murals are living billboards that give light and voice And this mural is letting you know that they are significant That they can contribute And that they can show up in the world So we’re all about preparing black girls for the world And the world for black girls So we ready to paint We’ve always partnered with drums. No guns Brother and Doctor Ram Bhagat will be kicking us off So Virginia Credit Union is a local credit union We were founded in Richmond in 1928 And so we’ve been giving back to the community for a long time But we thought this was an exciting way to invite our members To come out and be part of this As well as members of the community You know it starts with an idea But then we need to think about Who are the resources What are the resources in our community To actually make it come alive Often times we’re out in the community as credit union employees But here we got to work side by side Not only with the students but also with the members To see it change the look of the city And make the city look even more colorful and more vibrant It just adds to the community and makes it even a more wonderful place to live It’s important I think to connect with the people that you serve But also the people you live next to And this is a great way to hold hands With people that you may not necessarily see in the workplace Or in the branches But these are people who live and eat and breathe next to you So I think it’s wonderful It’s just a good feeling to know That you’re actually a part of the community And really helping a good cause Especially, Girls For A Change I teach some financial literacy classes with them as well So some of the girls I recognize And then to see them out in this platform It’s just very fulfilling And self-rewarding for me as well Art can bring equity to a community Art can be used to highlight The historical figures that are here or that were here Or things that are to come or will come It’s something that really can just bring a voice So we are just grateful for this partnership Here with Virginia Credit Union today But we’re also thinking about how we are going to partner beyond With financial literacy, with volunteer and mentor opportunities So this is just the beginning that’s right here behind me
